You can also use small portable lights around the garden which are often solar powered and are perfect for flower beds. These allow you to add low-level lighting to improve the ambience of the garden in exactly the right spot. 

How are they powered?

You have three core options for power when it comes to outdoor lighting, mains wired, mains plug or solar-powered. For fitted lighting that will be used throughout the garden, mains wired is the best option as it will ensure your lighting is protected through wind and rain and is convenient to turn on from your house. For more do it yourself options that you want to remain in place and not move frequently, a mains plug option is affordable and easy to install. This option works only if you have a properly installed outdoor plug that is protected from the elements.  Solar-powered garden lighting tends to be portable and easy to put into place. It’s ideal for a no-fuss approach and the development of solar power in recent years means there are plenty of quality options out there. 

Lights for Garden Fences

Lights for garden fences come in all shapes and sizes. If you are installing a mains wired lighting system make sure you use a qualified electrician for the process, ideally one with a specialism in outdoor lighting. 

Fitted wall lights

Fitted wall lights can run across the full length of your fencing providing lots of light throughout your space. They usually come as individual lightboxes and you utilise as many as you need. Both downlighting and uplighting options are available and in some designs, they provide both lighting aspects.

Not only can they provide a wonderful decorative element to your garden, but they will also provide an extra level of security for your home, especially if they are motion sensitive. 

String Lighting

The fun and easily installed string lighting option allows you to drape the lights wherever you need them more. Designs have come along way from simple fairground styled bulbs and there are now countless options. Whether you are looking for whimsical creations or sleek contemporary designs, string lights are a great option for easy application. Most come with a mains plug but there are wired options and many solar-powered ones too. Ensure you have secured the string in place to avoid risking damage on windy days. 

Low-Level Uplights

For a more dramatic and contemporary feel, we love low level or floor level uplights. These are particularly beautiful when paired with slatted fence panels as they really showcase the beautiful craftsmanship of the timber. These lights can be attached to the base of your fence or they can be set into the ground depending on the type. You can also set them further back from the fence in front of flower beds if you have unique foliage you want to show off. Think beautiful Japanese maples or ornamental grasses. 

Spike/post lights

If you’d like to display lighting in just a few key spots that are not accessible to power, then spike or post lights would work well. They are often solar-powered or battery-powered so they can be moved exactly where you need them without worrying about wiring.
